Testing the waters
Been trying out a new style of ink drawing. Not at all sure it works, think the big black cloud is too black, but was trying to go for the more graphic look with solid colour and texture. Think I need a few more attempts at this before I get the balance right...

I find pen and ink landscapes really quite challenging though I like the effect very much - I have to agree with you about the dark cloud, but I love the swirling movement in the sky and the hatching on the other clouds. I also like the wide variety of marks in the foreground and the textures you've created.
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks for your comment on 'Botticelli'.
This is a wonderfully, alive, drawing filled with movement and a great sense of value that carries our eyes around the drawing! Keep exploring...would love to see more. And your armchair travel sketches are out of this world!
ReplyDeleteCuriousCrow nailed my thoughts exactly! They are so difficult to do and you've done so well with all the different textures and values. Great job on experimenting and pushing yourself!
ReplyDeleteIt works for me!
ReplyDeleteHi Catriona,
ReplyDeleteYour ink drawing would translate into a very exciting etching. Can you find a printmaking studio in your area? I know you would be excited and pleased to work in printmaking.

I love this, and I agree about pen and ink being challenging. You did a wonderful job! You may have convinced me to try it one day. Great job!
ReplyDeleteThanks guys, I'm actually really interested in going into etching, and am trying to get on a short weekend course next year - finances allowing! Will keep you updated...
ReplyDeleteThis is great! I took etching and it's pretty hard to learn in a weekend. I took a full course and still didn't learn everything, except "don't put too many blankets on the press or it will get stuck and the teacher will fume and mumble under his breath while he tries to extricate your plate! Yikes! What a day that was for me! He warned us on the first day of class that it happens at least one time during each course so not to do it! Never thought it would be me to screw up his favorite settings! Oh, I miss school....
ReplyDeleteI love this style of work. The shapes catch your eye in a glance and closer inspection finds the patterns and detail very pleasing as well. Thank You..
