Social life, family life, long dog walks, all gone out the window, but now I'm back to some semblance of normality. 26 paintings delivered and hung, private view attended, and even better some paintings sold!! Phew. If you would like to see them in the flesh they are at Old Gala House, Galashiels, Scotland!! And should you wish to purchase (!?!) some you need to contact Old Gala House directly following the link.

Got the shock of my life when curiosity got the better of me. I borrowed a basic microscope from a friend as I wanted to see some plants and various other things up close and personal just to see what they were about, and I started with a small Creeping Thistle flower. When I focused in, I'm not afraid to admit, I jumped a mile out of my chair as this alien creature suddenly appeared in the viewfinder. It was all of 2mm big, not even quite 1/8th of an inch, so didn't notice it at all when I put it under the light, but in the viewfinder it was looked like a 10 foot alien creature with a definite human bloodsucking tendencies.

So this very small black blob, on closer inspection was an amazing insect with a really long proboscis type thing sucking the sap and two weird antennae type things on its rear end. Him (or her) and its friend were very obliging models and let me draw them, even in the full glare of the microscope light they didn't seem to mind having all their privacy taken away from them. I wonder if they saw a magnified eye looking down on them and were slightly freaked out themselves and were desperately sucking away at the sap trying to keep calm and hoping they hadn't been noticed. They were a beautiful deep rich purple with olive green legs and black knees. Though do insects have knees? The actual Creeping thistle was amazing too. I'll get round to painting it when I've got over my excitement of aliens.

I also looked at a fern with what to the naked eye looked like spores underneath, but on very close inspection it looked like a collection of worms under an umbrella. I know, totally technical terminology, but when they started flicking and moving I got freaked out and had to remove the fern. Maybe sometimes its not good looking too closely at things.

Who knew all this was right under our noses. I can see why the art director of Aliens apparently was inspired by creatures that appeared right here on earth. Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. Who needs aliens from outerspace, we've got our very own in our backyards. I think I'll have to do some research now in the anatomy of insects, as this has piqued my interest enough to seek out some more. Though, am slightly scared...

(ps ...oh, and those who are scientifically minded the magnification on the eyepiece said WF 10x/18 - whatever that means....)Catrionahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14680403731006439251noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2998217860254561132.post-41872102940759574352013-07-26T10:49:00.001+01:002013-07-26T10:49:42.333+01:00Knotty Business

Just started a basic dingy sailing course, and part of the course is to learn your knots. So thought I'd try drawing them to see if it could help me remember them, along with the little description to help you do it. Like the 'make a head, strangle it, and poke it in the eye' knot. Otherwise known as the figure of eight...Catrionahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14680403731006439251noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2998217860254561132.post-17392327388604272512013-07-24T23:18:00.000+01:002013-07-24T23:18:12.011+01:00Larry the Lamb

Thought I'd draw Larry the Lamb before he lost his scruffy coat. He's definitely not a pampered poodle, especially when he gets his 'teddy bear' cut. The big dogs don't recognise him when he gets back from his outing to the hairdresser. Hackles go up, bits get sniffed, and its only when he starts doing his usual rushing around and nipping dog heels that they realise who he is and the excitement is over and he's let back into the fold. Not that they have much choice. We all know who is really in charge....Catrionahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14680403731006439251noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2998217860254561132.post-38455083625052896492013-04-01T23:43:00.001+01:002013-04-01T23:43:58.591+01:00Fishing phase

So, saw this wee chappie whilst eating our fish and chips. We watched him as he watched us, him on the bonnet of the car, us inside it, taunting him. He looked very young and curious, beautiful back feathers, very bright and shiny not used or sullied yet. He had lovely white spots on his tail feathers when they were all folded up. Still don't know the difference in my gulls yet, but felt amenable to him and threw him a few chips at the end. I know, its just encouraging them, but they're having a hell of a winter as are we all.
Thought I'd try and capture the sunset as the light was fading in this wee harbour. More experiments in ink-rements. Took my inks to the woods with me and luckily it was by a stream so dogs were happy whilst I got lost in the colours. I was trying to capture the vibrant acid green of a spring wood and the dark dark trees amongst the leaves. The one above I just got into drawing the roots and path but thought I"d try a version of just the green behind.
This one I just wanted to concentrate on the greens, though the scanner hasn't really got the colours from my actual drawing.
All works in progress, not sure whether to make the background darker in the one below and draw more ferns emerging from the dark. Really enjoyed doing these, and again I was drawn back to the Scots pines, I've done a few paintings of these three trees with their red barks vibrant against the rest of the wood. More fun to be had I think with this ink, I'm enjoying seeing where its taking me...

When we finally got round to uncovering all the bulbs that we'd overwintered in vermiculite, we found these lily sprouting. I loved the colour of the stem and the bulb, and the little white shoots coming out of the base of the stalk, like little grubs.

So after doing the watercolour, I decided to try inks, not totally colour representative but great to see how the inks work and blend with each other. More practice needed I think to get balance right. As I say, a work in progress. Now I've planted the bulb, I'll wait till a flower comes and add it to the picture.
I braved the heady heights of St Abb's and drew the lighthouse, watching the gulls and cormorants and guillemots nesting on the steep cliffs. But I more worryingly watched a young researcher walk to the edges and cling on while he counted the birds. Didn't look like he had a care in the world, whereas my palms were going sweaty just looking at his precarious positions. Just after I finished the ink one a thick ha (sea mist) came in and obliterated everything from sight, which was a relief as I was getting almightly annoyed with the wind and trying to hang on to the paper and ink and pens and water and hair flapping in wind and.... but had a lovely day out anyway...
To save myself from getting too upset watching Scotland getting beaten yet again, I decided to draw and and get distracted by all the lovely arms and tight shirts of the rugby players. Couldn't believe how hard they are to draw though. Far too fast and furious, but I was nicely distracted thankyou very much...Catrionahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14680403731006439251noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2998217860254561132.post-88395407708155566052012-02-01T23:38:00.001+00:002012-02-01T23:38:50.658+00:00St Bride's Day

St Bride's day today. The start of Spring. Apparently...
Sowed a few seeds today too, apparently an auspicious day to do it, so lets wait and see how they do, although last years crop that we sowed that day did really well in the end so perhaps there is some truth in it? Think I have a tree obsession. Not sure how bad it is yet, but I've noticed, in the past 2 days I've done at least 5 drawings of them. This obsession came to light as I've been going through old drawings and photos of mine trying to find ideas to turn into etchings. Putting together several images, I realised two thirds of them where trees, or wood related.

Very quick colour sketch, one day to turn into a proper painting, but I loved the way the winter light hit the bare poplars, with some of them in rich lilac shade.
So this is is one of the things that I've been doing that is keeping me out of trouble till the wee small hours of the morning. (5.30am to be exact but nothing like a last minute panic to get the creative juices going...)

Managed to get three illustrations and an idea for a cover (above) done for an illustration competition for the Folio Society. I love, love, love this publisher. They publish beautiful hard back, mostly illustrated books. All great quality, and its been one of my dreams to become one of their illustrators. Anyway, I heard about this competition only relatively recently, so once I read the book - 'The Bloody Chamber' by Angela Carter, I couldn't wait to try some ideas. The book is a collection of short stories, all adaptions of fairy tales like Little Red Riding Hood, Beauty and the Beast, and Puss-in -Boots, but for adults. So some pretty interesting interpretations of the old favourites, which made it really exciting to try and illustrate. The one above is called Wolf Alice, about a girl bought up by wolves, and half 'tamed' and humanised by nuns but left to live alone with a werewolf in a castle. Great story.

So, now its a case of crossing fingers, waiting, and hoping to hear the results. But as they say, its the taking part that counts...
Due to serendipity (I love that word) I got chatting to a lovely lady called Cheryl James and we got chatting about art and photography, and she mentioned that she was doing an installation in an old mill. I said how I would love to draw a place like that, and lo and behold, she said there was space for me to join her in her exhibition.
One lovely guy working there, been working in the mills for 50 odd years, and only been out of work for 5 minutes. Said he got made redundant from one mill, walked down the road and got hired at the next mill. Had incredible stories, but getting him to stop...
Finally found this lovely beach in East Lothian near North Berwick. A few people have told me about it over the years but said I had to find it for myself as it was so special. So all I'm saying for those who care to find it, its east of North Berwick, and left down a little leafy lane, and down a bit...
Fabulous secret not so little beach, a few people there but all studiously ignoring each other pretending it was just there for themselves. Great views over the Firth of Forth, and Bass Rock covered in guano shimmers in the sun. Went down to Kielder Forest in Northumberland and came across a huge patch of them. Spent what felt like an hour picking them in the heat surrounded by flies and midges, and ended up with only a wee bag of them. Just enough for a pie, but oh what a pie! We were actually on our way to see the Wave Chamber by Chris Drury. A stone built beehive that you went in, shut the door and sat in the dark, until you realise that you're looking at waves on the stone floor. The hut is right on the edge of the reservoir and its a camera obscura reflecting the water into the hut. All you can hear is the water lapping at the shore, and see this reflection. Lovely meditative place. Thought I'd try and draw all the animals I saw whilst up there - was dying to see a moose and a bear, but no luck. Or thought I saw a moose, but have a feeling it was just a deer. Definitely saw a beaver though, very exciting swimming alongside the road in a ditch. And a porcupine. Dead one, but definitely a porcupine.... But by far the most exciting one was what we think was a snowy owl. Just above my brother's field, circling the trees, huge and beautiful. My brother and girlfriend moved out there last year and have started a flower farm, beautiful place, all organic and free living. Check our their blog if you get a chance, great reading about all their adventures in setting up a farm in a totally new environment to them. I'm so glad we made it out there, and great to be able to contribute my lil bit to their cause!
Not a great representation this as it was drawn in what must have been -10 degree wind chill, so no feeling at all in my hands, or brain, but one day I'll return in the warmth. It has a great lighthouse, and the whole village has been built on granite. William deGarthe, an artist, lived there and when he was 70 he started carving out a 30m mural on this granite dedicated to the fishermen. Amazing piece of work, but 7 years later he died, not having finished it. Amazing dedication to work on something that consistently, to still maintain that vision after all those years.Catrionahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14680403731006439251noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2998217860254561132.post-40894712993926387122011-05-30T22:55:00.000+01:002011-05-30T22:55:25.414+01:00New York 2

Loved all the different fire (?) hydrants I saw on my trip. A wee taster of two completely different places, both fascinating, and both great. Not nearly enough time spent in each place, but a good introduction to both brothers lives across the pond.
Apparently they all have to be the same style, only one company makes them, just to keep the integrity of the New York skyline. I've walked past this tree many a time and always marvelled at the perfect circles, so I finally decided to stop and draw it, and celebrate the clever wee elusive birds. Yet again the dogs waited patiently, well sort of. A stick kept being dropped at my feet at a not so subtle hint to get moving, stop drawing and start playing. One day I hope to catch a woodpecker on paper...Catrionahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14680403731006439251noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2998217860254561132.post-45587303151038421222011-02-01T23:58:00.001+00:002011-02-02T00:01:50.321+00:00St Bride's Day

Heard when I got up that it was St Bride's Day, goddess of fire and light. St Brigid is said to have helped the Virgin give birth to Jesus - whence she is the protector of pregnant women and midwives. Her pagan namesake, the Celtic goddess Brigit, was also associated with fertility and childbirth. Her feast day, is also the Gaelic spring festival of Imbolc, On this mystic day adders were believed to abandon their winter lairs: and the oyster-catcher birds, called in Gaelic Gille Brighde, ' the servants of Bride', made their appearance, bringing Spring with them. We saw a huge flock of them in a field today, coincidence? Not sure if I can remember seeing them earlier this year.
So this first day of February, we were told it was a good day to sow some seeds, so our new propagator bed was put to its test and tomatoes were sown. Shame she doesn't guard against forgetfulness. Forgot to turn off the hose filling up the water tank in the greenhouse, so guess what is now flooded...Catrionahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14680403731006439251noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2998217860254561132.post-1752769264049972912011-01-31T12:59:00.000+00:002011-01-31T12:59:15.672+00:00Pottering On

Can't wait, its feeling oh so that much closer to Spring and all it holds. Drew these pots in a friends' greenhouse while it was getting fixed after the snow bought all the panels in. Was meant to be helping but got distracted by all these cacti in their terracotta pots. Only very quickly painted afterwards, but it got me all excited about the planting plans and ideas that are shortly to be put in place. Also just started a fascinating book about the 'Secret Life of Plants' by Peter Tompkins. Written back in the 60's but still relevant. Makes me think twice now about how I talk and deal with plants. A must read for anyone who is even vaguely interested in plants.Catrionahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14680403731006439251noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2998217860254561132.post-50699217985992632522011-01-24T16:35:00.000+00:002011-01-24T16:35:49.814+00:00This little piggie

Great to have them, and learn all about them, not so great having to go out and feed them through 3 feet of snow over Christmas, but glad we did it. Thought I'd try and capture them, but all I mostly managed to get was their backsides as most of the time they had their heads down in a trough or the mud rooting around. They did like the occasional scratch behind their ears where they went off in a kind of trance and leant into my hand. Only found out last week though that they were males.
